Jan Fransoo - President of the Internation Korfball Federation

I am very happy to welcome you to Carcavelos for the Final Round of this Europa Cup season. After a heavily contested first round, seven teams qualified to compete with the Portugese champion Benfica to contest the Alphons Janssens Trophy. Last year's winners DOS'46 Nyeveen from the Netherlands have again won the Dutch championship and thus have the opportunity to defend their European title.

The Europa Cup has along history, as it is the longest continuous international competition in korfball. It is also is one of the only two opportunities for club teams to compete internationally, next to the Europa Shield competition. From next year onwards, we will extend the competition of the final round to four days and most likely three or four groups in the First Round. Before too long, I personally hope that we will be able to move towards a competition model with a First Round and a Second Round before contesting the Trophy in a Final Four competition. The fast growth of our sport in Europe should make this a feasible goal within four years.

I wish all participants and officials a successful and enjoyable competition.

The qualities of this fantastic sport will be in evidence by observing some of the best european players and will certain be one moment of unforgiven emotions and competitive excellence.

The Portuguese Korfball has a main role in the World like the excellent 4th place in the last World Championship shows. It was attributed to the last year´s national champion the organization of this competition and we are sure that they will be at the expectable level. We want to express a sincere thanks to the Organizing Committee and to all the volunteers that with a great effort allowed to organize this event and helped projecting the name of Portugal, Cascais and the International Korfball.
